How long is the blocked account required in Germany?
Foreign students applying for a visa to Germany are generally required to open a blocked account ( Sperrkonto) . This account fulfills a key function under residency law: It serves as proof that they will be able to support themselves during their planned study stay . It works incredibly simply – the account is credited with a fixed total amount, of which only a certain portion is available each month. But how long is such a blocked account actually needed?
Duration blocked account visa Germany
In most cases, the blocked account is initially set up for a period of one year . This is because many student visas in Germany are initially limited to one year. The account therefore covers living expenses for this period – the current monthly amount is around €934. Accordingly, approximately €11,200 must be deposited to open the account before the visa application can be submitted.
However, if the stay is planned for a shorter period – for example, for an exchange semester or a language course – the blocked account can also be set up for a correspondingly shorter period. The term of the account generally depends on the planned stay. It is also possible to extend the account if the study stay is extended, or to replace it with other proof of funding, such as a scholarship or a sponsor.
Closure of blocked account after expiry
After the visa expires or the student actually leaves Germany, the blocked account can be closed again . The remaining balance is usually released upon presentation of appropriate documentation, such as a de-registration certificate, proof of departure, or a visa application rejection. The latter is particularly important: Even if the visa is not granted, the deposited funds are not lost—they will be returned in full after the account is closed.
Conclusion How long blocked account
The blocked account is therefore not just a bureaucratic tool, but a central component in the visa process for international students. It ensures that the stay in Germany can be financed independently – and at the same time provides the German authorities with the necessary legal certainty. The duration of the blocked account is generally based on the length of stay.
